Although there are common group techniques to be learned, anyone who has compassion for others can help them to better understand themselves. The information about themselves is very personal and should always be given from a positive point-of-view.
Have you ever wondered what your personality labels mean about you?
Everyone has many personality labels yet most of us resist being labeled. Over a lifetime, we each will have hundreds of labels because we have unique life experiences. The main way that we learn our labels is from others. We generally resist these learnings as it feels that the labels have a negative connotation. Yet most of our labels are positive and negative at the same time.
Addiction treatment by the medical model means that an addict is "sick" and that someone else knows how to get that addict "well". In reality, each person has a part of themselves that is perfect and was given to them at birth. The basic problem with the medical model of addiction recovery is that the medical field calls someone "well" by sending them to take classes about symptoms and this determines the level of "help" that the “well†person will be able to give.
The medical model includes mental health/addiction counselors, therapists, and treatment centers. The medical model of addiction treatment doesn't work because: (1) No one except the addict can decide to give up the addiction. (2) No one but the addict holds the key to recovery. (3) Others can support a desire to change a life but only the addict can decide to let go. (4) Addiction is about someone making the choice to continue using a substance, a lifestyle, an attitude to others, etc.
Psychotherapy in its beginnings was to be done by a therapist who was also in her/his own therapy as a protection or screen against unhealed healers. Over the years, and especially after addiction was classified a "disease" by the same people slated to make money from this classification, therapists could instead go to a school, take classes, get degrees, and become instant "healers".The therapy was let go as not needed.
